Rab Ne Bana Di…..definately not.
The circumstances drove me to a situation where I was , on a Sunday evening, watching the latest Shahrukh Khan starrer “ Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”. To say that I was forced into this would be unfair. A SRK movie directed by Aditya Chopra and coming from Yash Raj films had success written on it from beginning.
Aditya Chopra gave us Dilwale or DDLJ as its now know. The movie was a trendsetter in more then one ways. It gave us a Rebel Lover who would go to any length to get his lady love, it gave us SRK and Kajol pairing which is one of the best in contemporary cinema, it also had some great music by Jatin-Lalit which is still magic to ears and it gave us a great director who promised so much in his debut movie.
Looking back at last two year’s movie releases, I have liked SRK only in Swadesh and Chak De. These were the movies with great screenplay and some excellent acting by King Khan. People would be wondering why I have not mentioned the biggest of them all “ Om Shanti Om”. Actually I hated OSO. With its own production house this could have been a movie of lifetime for SRK, instead what was dished out was a half cooked, half-baked dish with some excellent topping and dressing. Some commercial compulsions had taken over the creative instincts maybe.
So what was so bad at Rab Ne ? Or let me put it what was good in this movie ? I think the new actress was refreshing in her role however her limitations could be seen in emotional scenes. The Music is just average despite ruling the charts. The screenplay had too many flaws and direction is disappointing. Maybe Aditya Chopra was not fully into making of this movie.
And what about SRK ? He was the worst thing in the movie. In both the character he enacts he is very loud. In the main character he tries to do a Raj Kapoor or Amol Paleker and is really bad in both the attempts. And in his favorite Raj he is still trying to be the same Raj of DDLJ. The wrinkles on his face could not escape the make up. His teeth, after rigorous smoking, aren’t white any more and his stammering which looked so good in DDLJ looks pathetic. Time for some introspection Mr Khan ?
Guess what was the highlight of the show ? The trailer of Gajini ……
