Retail (R)evolution

As 26th January approached once again every person living in decent city started to get excited. Old Freedom fighters please dont start getting so happy, its not the patriotic emotions which were flowing, its the fact that all the leading department retail stores were offering that so called "miss it at your cost" 3 days deadly sale. The trend was started by Mr Kishore Biyani with his Big Bazaar brand in the year 2006. That year broke all the record ever achieved on the daily sales in retail departmental stores. It also saw nearly all these big cities coming to stand still and a huge law & order crisis which resulted subsequently. So this year even I decided on visiting these dreaded sales and improve my status in the Page 3 circles. Lots of reasons led me to this, those colorful full page advertisements with extremely ridiculous prices written on it, shopping experience of my uncle who went on the first day & was very happy, the mention of this sale in Mr Biyani’s books & lots of coverage in the newspaper etc.

So here I was in the cool sunny winter of January standing in a queue to get into the Big Bazaar. It took us almost 15 minutes to get in (I was with my family). Once inside the scene was totally different. The store was full with crowds of all the age and class. Every body was trying to get their hands on one stuff or other as if they were all given for free. The trolleys used to carry the material were fighting for the place on the aisles as if Tata’s Nano car has already arrived on road. Everywhere there was a commotion to lead the way. I also tried to explore the possibility to pick up the right stuff.

Once you finish picking up the stuff there were long queues for the billing. Those people who are in a habit for hardly giving an inch were gleefully waiting for their turn to arrive for the payment. They were patiently waiting for their number even it meant standing in the queues for longer time. No ways were they were ready to miss out on this chance.

So this experience completed my education on the current Retail revolution in this country. Apart from Big Bazaar, I did our monthly shopping at the Nearby Tru Mart store. This store used to serve on our day to day needs including the vegetables which had bar codes stickers on them. I don’t know why people laugh at Idea’s Advertisement when they gave numbers to people in place of names. Aren’t we are used to eating vegetables & fruits with bar coded numbers put on them. The day when potato will be universally given code such as 11223344 so that the billing is easy is not far off. My wife would say that bring 2 kgs of 11223344 where just a difference in one digit might make a vast difference in taste and color.

So people we are entering a new phase in Indian economy. Tru Mart is now India Bulls mart. My friendly neighborhood Tru Mart store is closed due to heavy losses after the take over. Pyramid with such a beautiful colored logo is also now India Bulls product and is all green.

Retail is here and is here to stay. Things are much better organized then they ever were. Like green revolution, milk revolution etc welcome my fellow country men to Retail Revolution.
