Laying off !!!

So the international syndrome that landed in Indian shores a while ago also seeped into our organization. With severe cash crunch and nose-diving sales revenues, the decision was finally taken to down size the company or cut some organs of the body, as they seemed not to be required. Its not that we didn’t gave ear to our Finance Minister’s advice.

The expenses were already being curtailed since July onwards. Few Air conditioners were made to look as if they were not working but actually their cables were removed from transformers. The limit of incurring expenses with out sanctions was withdrawn and all the unplanned expenses were to be sanctioned by either of the partners. The limits of mobile bills was squeezed, tours were delayed or postponed till inevitable. Hence lots of efforts were made and they did started giving encouraging results.

With the market slipping further down since October, the need has arisen to go one more step i.e asking few people to leave. Now this is some thing we were not very experienced at and would have loved it that way. To ask some body to leave the job is one of the most difficult thing to do. But the factors have reached a stage that this situation is now facing us right in front.

The biggest decision in cutting down the manpower is identifying the correct people. We have seen people removing the wrong employees and repenting later on. So the identification was based on the profile, efficiency and track record. Yes the salary paid was also a criterion. Once the names were finalized the biggest challenge was to inform the fate to the unlucky ones.

We are very clear that we will offer ample time to the employees so that they can look for the alternative job. A combine meeting of all the employees was called and the situation and decision was brought into their notices. They were informed about the Pink slip offering to few of them in future and an exit windows for the ones who wants to quit.

As luck would have it, in the next 10 days 70% of the person identified left or resigned with out them being told about their fate. Hence they were very well aware of their lacuna in terms of performances. The balance 30% were then reviewed and some were offered additional responsibilities along with existing ones so as to save costs.

The fact is that we were required to ask only two persons to leave the company out of which one was driver. The people who are now left are giving in their 100% efforts. The efficiency is increased and we could see lot of all-rounders now developed.

Not a very pleasurable management exercise but a must in today’s economic scenario. Guess what is the top headline on Rediff.com just now : Pink Slip mayhem continues……
